A Landmark Steeped in History

Step into a piece of Colorado’s past, this very building was once the first capital of the Colorado Territory. In 1863, William A.H. Loveland, a visionary leader in Golden’s early days, constructed it to serve as the heart of the territory’s government. From 1862 to 1867, lawmakers gathered here, until Denver won the title of capital in a controversial vote rumored to be swayed by bribes.

In 1865, the westernmost room was added to house the Territorial Library, and over the past 160+ years, these walls have witnessed life as a general store, saloon, hotel, and restaurant, each chapter adding to its rich, story-filled history.
