About This Building

Golden became the capital of the Colorado Territory in 1862 and this building was its first capitol. William A.H. Loveland, a key player in Golden's formation and growth, constructed the building in 1863.

The Territorial Legislature met in this building until 1867 - when Denver became the new capital through a vote widely rumored to be purchased with bribes. The westernmost room was added to the building in 1865 to house the Territorial Library. The building has a fascinating, story-filled history as a general store, saloon, hotel, and restaurant over its 160+ years.

Please feel free to explore the place and experience a piece of Colorado's incredible history.
